Either you have a bad alternator or you have it wired wrong. With the engine running you should have around 14 volts acroos the battery and if its not running about 12.5 volts. Sounds like the wire to excite the alternator isn't wired right or its not exciting for some reason. The way it should be wired is. #1 terminal from the little plug goes to the swithc with either a lite or diode in line, #2 to the big post on the alternator and the big post to the battery of soliniod.
