1. Make sure the packing is the right size. It should just fit between the shaft & the housing. It has to expand enough to fill the gap between the shaft and housing when its compressed by the packing nut. 2. If there are multiple layers, make sure the ends in each layer are offset. 3. There's an art to tightening packing. It has to be tight enough to seal against the shaft, but not so tight as to overheat from friction. If you are sure the packing is the right size, you might try tightening tha packing nut a little at a time & see if the leak stops. Keith
