You could have had the float stick as you approached the top and fuel consumption diminished the float will rise a little. If the float sticks the fuel level may get too high and cause the float to pop loose and then stick in the closed position. Did you try the choke as it was dying? Or, you may have something floating around in the fuel tank plugged the opening. i've had this happen and it is hard to find. Or you may have trash in the shutoff valve which limits fuel flow and you were using maximum fuel in second gear and starved the engine. In first gear, with the same load, you will not use as much fuel in gallons per minute. I've had this happen and it is hard to find. Or, it may be the coil going bad. Or the condenser. Or, maybe, Mr. Haney is smarter than you and just wanted to have a little fun at your expense.
