It certainly sounds like you have a problem, but I'd suggest a compression test to confirm it before you sink a lot of dollars into it.

For a Farmall A, you can put 3-1/8 pistons and sleeves in it. That is 1/8 inch oversize. You can also get those in a high compression (stepped head) piston. The IH brand name for them is Fire Craters (if I remember right). Several other manufacturers have their own version of them.

I used Clevite 3-1/8, stepped head pistons in my B (same engine) with good results.
