Farmall M carb problems

Our 1941 farmall M is running too rich it has some sooty black smoke coming out of the exhaust. We have rebuilt the carbureautor it has a 4 cyl gas engine. The engine has recently been rebuilt but that was before we bought it. When the throttle is increased it kills the engine then it catches and starts running at a higher RPM sometimes it even backfires. Just can't seem to get it adjusted without it killing the engine. Any advice from someone with more tractor experience than us would be appreciated. This is our first tractor.
