I just had the same problem with an M. I changed the plugs to Champion D21's. They are hotter burning. Next I leaned out the carb tightening the gasoline screw in to about .75 of a turn. I next closed the point gap a little and that also helped somewhat. I next replaced the coil trying to get a hotter spark. This helped a little also. After that I adjusted the valves. Last but not least I rolled the distributor in toward the block and it almost totally quit blowing black smoke. It seems to be alright now, but I still think it needs worked hard to burn off any residual carbon on the plugs.
