Does that one have the tach drive that runs off the front of the camshaft? I know that the U.S.-built tractors with the German engine do, but I'm not sure about the British-built ones like your 684. I have seen a few problems with the tach drive on the U.S.-built tractors with the German engine. Our 3088's tach would stop working altogether. I could unhook the cable from the drive and see that the drive was not turning. I'd remove and inspect the drive, find no problem with it, reinstall it, and it would work fine for about a month. Eventually I figured out that the tiny little shaft that fits between the camshaft and the tach drive was sliding forward and disengaging from the camshaft. I measured that little shaft and found it to be about 13/16" long. I kept welding up the end that fits into the camshaft and grinding it to the correct shape until it was 1" long. Haven't had a problem since. Be very careful, as that little shaft is small and could be dropped down into the front engine cover. It's also kind of difficult to get that little shaft so it engages both the cam and the tach drive as you reinstall the drive, so start the engine and make sure the drive is turning before you hook the cable back up. Also, there's a jam nut that holds the drive from turning, it often works loose. It's hard to get a wrench on, you need somthing very skinny, beleive it's a 7/8" wrench size. I modified one of the wrenches that came with a 4" angle grinder.

He had over a period of months spent a fair amount of his hard earned cash on replacement parts for the old "trembler" ignition. Sadly though all his efforts seemed to be a waste of time and money as he still couldn''t get the temperamental old thing to run correctly!! If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce
