Indeed Hugh! When I was a kid "standard equipment" on every Farmall I ran was a 3/4" combination wrench hung from the starter rod loop.

Likes The Farm: Might be a sticky starter bendix. More likely however the bendix pinion teeth are worn. Usually a new bendix solves the problem.

However if the flywheel ring gear teeth are also badly worn a new bendix can actually make the problem worse. Only solution then is to replace the ring gear.
