Super H, dead battry

I have been having troubles with my Super H holding a charge, I have the 3 wire hitachi alternator. and I think that I need a diode or something so the volts dont drain into the alternator when off. It does charge good when rinning. Doed anyone know what type of diode I need and where do I put in in line???
