PTO snap ring design problem in early 560's and si

At the inner end of the PTO output shaft in the clutch type PTO units on the 340, 450, 504, 560 and other tractors, there is a clutch retainer snap ring or retaining ring (no. 47 on 560 diagram, part 373588R1, that is used with the original shaft, 373546R1. This must have proven to be too weak, so the ring is not even replaceable, and the new one is twice as thick (1/8 inch square crosssection) but must be installed with the new R2 version of the shaft. Does anyone have any experience with this issue? I'm thinking about widening the snap ring groove on my lathe to take the new one, but that would leave only a very thin shoulder. Don't know if the newer shaft had a different end profile. Thanks. Charlie
