THe old ring was at one time like the new one, it is just misshapen from age. The notches go to the front, and you will have a long and happy relationship with the aluminum pistons, they are compatible with the metal of the sleeves, and a better material than the old ones. The reduced weight is also less stressful on the rod bearings and causes less reciprocating mass. Go for it, JimN
