I spent 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard. I joined in 1978 and did boot camp in Alameda, Ca. Was stationed on the Cutter Westwind out of Milwaukee, WI, where we broke ice in the Great Lakes in the winter, and in the Arctic in the summer. Trained in Yorktown, VA, then tranferred to San Francisco where I did search and rescue, and law enforcement on the bay. I spent a month in Marathon, FL, chasing Cuban refugees during the Marielle Boatlift. Transferred to Lake Tahoe for more SAR and LE. Transferred to Port Clarence, Alaska, 80 miles north of Nome where I baby-sat a Loran transmitter for a year. Transferred to Portland, OR, for more SAR and LE duty. Tranferred to Astoria, OR to ride herd on the Columbia River bar. Tranferred to the Cutter Active out of Port Angeles, WA, where we patrolled from Alaska to Mexico. Transferred to the Cutter Polar Sea out of Seattle, WA, where we made a science voyage to the North Pole, then continued down the eastern seaboard, stopping in Halifax and Boston, then Panama and back to Seattle. Transferred to Port Angeles, WA and retired.
