Your life will be much easier if you know what tractor you have.

As far as further advice, I suggest you visit your local library and check out a book on gasoline engines if you're not familiar with the whole, "suck, squeeze, bang, blow" and "air, fuel and fire, at the right time" stuff. Knowing the basics about how a gasoline engine runs will help you troubleshoot. It's not all that complicated.
