David – That “snap” you hear when you first apply the brakes is pretty much normal. As your farmer friend suggests the snapping should diminish/disappear as the brakes wear in.

To adjust the pedal free play simply adjust the pull rod on the right pedal so the pedal moves freely about 1” before the brake disk makes contact. (You can feel when the disk makes contact when you move the pedal by hand). Then adjust the left pedal to match the right.
