roger, you have to run the tank with the overflow because when the carb float needle shuts off the gas the fuel pump keeps pumping and thus the return or overflow to the tank. sort of like a pressure bypass on an electric fuel pump. when the pressure gets to a certain level the pump shuts off until the pressure drops. i don't think there are any pressure bypasses on any f-12 fuel pumps but i could be wrong. good luck.
