super_m...First I would make sure your brakes are adjusted properly (about 1" of free travel on the pedal). If they are and that's not the problem, then you need to remove the brake covers and see what's going on. Everything should be CLEAN inside. If the actuator plates, springs or balls show any rust, clean them. Also check the splined shafts for burrs or nicks and clean them up with sandpaper. And jwal10 was right, look for any broken springs or balls that show extreme pitting. All these conditions can interfere with normal brake action. The balls have to move smoothly up the ramps machined into the actuator plates when the brakes are applied. Check for nicks, pitting or rust there too. When you reassemble the brakes, put a LIGHT coat of graphite lubricant on the balls. Put a LIGHT coat of Never-Seize lubricant on the splined shafts. The real SM brake expert on this site is Bob M. His advice helped me replace the brakes on my SM. I'm basically passing along the same things he told me. Hope this helps. David
