You have the right idea,I'd pull the pan and clean it out,clean out the filter,and pull the valve cover and physically clean the crud out.If you do this,you'll have most of it for the exception of the front cover.Put it back together,put good quality oil in it,work it and change the oil again.Thinning the oil with kerosene or diesel fuel isn't such a good idea,not only might you loosen and clog something,thin oil is hard on the bottom end.My 2 cents worth. 5 quarts of oil and a filter is cheaper then a set of bearings and turning a crank.
