Would not say inline filter is realy needed but my M will run all day under load and not miss a lick and it has inline filter. Some inline filters will work with gravity flow and some will not. All you have to do to check filter is pull line off carburator and if you are getting good flow there filter or sediment bowl are not the problem. 140 only needs 2 or 3 gallon per hour flow under load.
