I don't think you should hurt the T/A either way since you will be pulling it in neutral, but just to be sure I would leave it forward/direct drive (away from the operator). If you can't find a trailer, I would strongly recommend that you pull it with another tractor in a lower gear ie third or fourth if you have an old M or H. If you must pull with a truck don't go over 5 mph. Don't ask how I know.
