Well the IHC operator's manual says to fill the steering box with transmission oil (85W-90 or similar). However as others observe keeping the stuff from leaking out from the bottom can be a problem - even after a new pivot shaft seal installed. I packed both of mine (SH and SM) full with good gun grease 7 or 8 years ago. Neither has leaked a drop since, and the steering remains nice and smooth after several hundred hours of operation (mine are not show tractors!)
