I've been using the wooden dowel trick for quite a few years - not always to diagnose a problem, but to listen to the engine/transmission of a potential purchase to see if they are trying to hide something. Still going to get myself one of those nice stethoscopes someday, though... along with a bore-scope so I can see inside the engine.
