I believe it is part of the buyers responsibilty to ensure the item is the right item. If pictures were provided and measurements provided, what else can the seller do? If the item came off the tractor said, and it doesnt fit the other one, whose to say which is modified. I'm not talking in this case, I just mean in general. Casting numbers also help to verify identity. I would be content with getting most of my money back then no money at all. Nobody really wins in these situations. If it was a local exchange, of course a full refund would be in order.
