Mag/distrubutor removal and reinstall

I am degreasing 59 years of baked on grease and dirt from my 48 H. In doing so I had to remove the Mag assy at the oil filler housing. I was careful to wire the gear, from moving, after I pulled it out to avoid a timing problem when I reinstalled it.Now that it is ready to go back on, if the gear is off a notch either way, will I have to retime the engine? Second question, If I need to retime, what is the easiest way to tell if the #1 cyl is TDC?
