If you don't absolutely need the live PTO or live hydraulics, I think the letter series is the way to go for absolute sheer simplicity. The 300/350/400/450 is still simple compared to a more modern machine, but those live options add a few extra moving parts (more to go wrong). Of course I'm biased since I own an A, 2 H's, and a W-9... and I'm cheap and the letter series comes pretty cheap. $1500 will buy a darn nice H or M. If you need live hydraulics but not PTO, look at a Super series.
