Had the same problem on a Minnie Mo Z. Four cylinder gas engines come to rest in two places so the starter drive gear engages the flywheel in those same places most of the time. It wears the teeth and eventually the bevel on the teeth gets worn flat-then the starter drive gear will hit the flat end of the ring gear tooth and jam. Turn the engine backwards and it will release the bengix tension. Pull the starter and use a dremel with a carbide (or better) bit and grind new bevels on the bad teeth. Look at nearby teeth for a pattern and make sure to grind down the worn area of the teeth to be flush with the valley between them. Put a new drive pinion gear on the bendix and it should last quite a while. The 6 volt starter jumps very fast with 12 volts on it and this accellerates the wear.
