Cans in drag links on 300u

The things I very poorly described as "cans" in my earlier post I will try to describe more accurately here.
They start about 6" back from the front tie rod on the drag link. The drag link does not seem to be fastened solid to the front of them but goes inside, but the drag link is welded solid on the other end (seat side). These are steel "tubes, about 8 inches long and 2 3/8ths " O.D. What are they for or what do they do?
Also, Thanks to all on the help to tighten the splines, those suggestions will be followed when it warms up, 15 degrees below now.
