It sounds like you have a type of "torsion" drag links. They are two piece like you describe with a spring inside. Apparently they take some of the shock away from driver on rough ground, I guess. My 300/350 parts manual doesn't show them, but I believe my 330/340 manual does, which I don't have with me now to look at. Have only seen them on one tractor and in manual.
