I would definitely change the filter.
My hydraulic pump whimes too, and from discussions with others, some say there's has done that since new, but to me there has to be a cause. I havent got into it, but some day I might take her apart and check it out, maybe next winter or around fall after the track is complete, I dont know yet. Problem with touching these old beast is my fear of breaking bolts, which never makes for a good project =\
