When they are apart, I have found, looking particularly carefully at the grooves in the ramps will tell much of the story. As aluded to By T Vet, the ramps get wear spots at he point they were operating for years. These wear spots are very slight depressions that will allow the balls to "fall" into them when applied. The result is instantaneous locking of the brake, and even more wear in the dent I am refering to. Very careful removal of that depression using a stone of exactly the correct size (in all 12 grooves) willwork. Getting different disks will cause them to be running in a new location, Machining the housing will also change the dynamics. The best is new/replacement expander setups. The disks wear so slowly that the wear on the ramps is focused on one spot on each ramp. Ball roundness is important, but only found in a few instances. JimN
