Mark, Have you thought about finding a 3 point hitch finish mower and then having a couple fast hitch prongs attached to the mower as in a fast hitch finish mower? I think provisions could be fabricated and installed on a finish mower which would make it quite useable while keeping the area around the PTO shaft free and clear. Actually, I saw a fast hitch finish mower for sale a few months ago on Ebay somewhere in Kansas. It appeared quite nice even if it was painted blue. Hope this helps as the fast hitch prongs can be found in salvage yards, Hal.
