Aaron is 99.44% correct. The symptoms you describe are from the starter hanging up just a wee bit. Two teeth try to engage one on the flywheel. You were lucky to get it loose. If it happens again try putting it in high gear, MAKING SURE THE IGNITION IS OFF try to rock the tractor backwards, sometimes this works. Next thing to try is loosening the starter bolts and let the pressure off the gears, this always works. If the starter locks up very many times you better think about getting it rebuilt.
