If it was ice, the tractor wouldn't move AT ALL. The tractor is stuck in two gears. A very common problem. The shift lever has a little ball on the end that's worn off from 60+ years of use, and slips out of the shifter forks easily. You need to remove the shift lever and look down in the hole. Use a screwdriver to center and line up the slots in the three bars you'll see down in the hole. Be sure to block the tractor's wheels so it doesn't roll over you when you finally pull it out of gear.
