I just (in the last six or eight months) put a new pressure plate assembly and friction disk in my H. All I can remember about it now (Al's Hammer is steady tapping) is that I kept (I mean repeatedly) leaving a socket on one of the bolts when I would try to turn the engine to get to the next one.
I do know that I don't have a shortened pilot shaft; I must have used the one that stays in it. I don't remember having had any trouble at all lining it up.
I often find my self saying this...if I can do it anybody can.

Oh, yeah, now I remember something else. And it was the same the time I took the drive shaft, etc., out to get at the transmission shaft. The hardest part is getting the yoke and cross shaft and their darn near impossible to reach little nuts and bolts for the release bearing back in. And I'm afraid I didn't learn an easy way. Just gotta keep trying.... it will go.
