Many of the chassis parts are the same on the M and the MD. I believe most everything from the engine back is the same except for fuel system parts, throttle linkages and electrical. All MDs were originally 12 volt electrical. So yes, I think you could swap the rear ends. The MD does have a slightly longer wheelbase than the M, due to the engine being longer. That means the side support rails are longer on the MD and will not work on an M. Why don't you just fix up your MD??? Sounded like it was just a problem with the timing gears which should not be too hard to deal with. If it ran good on diesel I think it would be worth the effort to get into fixing it.
