460 clutch/TA question

Hey guys, I just baled about 10 acres for my neighbor using his 460. It doesn't like to shift without grinding gears but i noticed that if I pull the TA back it goes into gear fine. I searched the archives and found some saying the TA clutch and the main clutch must both disengage. This doesn't make since to me since the main clutch disengages the entire tranny. So, can someone tell me if this is correct and if so why do they both have to disengage? Thanks for the great advice and God Bless
