I am fairly sure it doesn't matter, because you can easily switch these old tractors from positive ground to negative ground by swapping battery cables, swapping ammeter cables, and repolarizing the generator.

Once you put the generator on the tractor and get it wired up, you just need to polarize it so it charges properly.
