Two weeks ago the Texas floods put our back 80 (our only 80) under one to five feet of water. Only the bermuda grass and some ragweed survived immersion for this long.
Today was the first day the soil dried out enough to disc in the rotted vegetation that was left. This was the first real work for the "new" 656. After approximately 1 hour it just quit, like I switched off the key. I let it rest for about a minute and it started right back up. After about 5-10 more minutes it quit again. This time when I cranked it would not refire. Up until this event the tractor has always started instantly for me.
Since I want to finish discing while the ground moisture is right I'm OK with shotgun style responses (i.e. throwing parts at it)... but which parts? I'm guessing electrical but my history of diagnosing stuff is not that great. Last weekend I pulled and cleaned sparked plugs and checked plug gap and did a simple engine compression test.
Only other clues I have that may or may not be related
#1) After being fine for several weeks the battery was drawn down last week.
#2) Today, after about 1/2 hour of pulling the disc the engine would miss for about a minute then it would instantly smooth out for a period of time.
I'm going to go to the Case/IH house in the morning to get condensor, coil, cap and rotors based on a recent post about a 1949 H. I haven't owned anything with points since my 1970 Olds but I don't ever remember points causing something like this?
