Pilot bearing is a possibility, but it sounds like a classic bad throwout bearing to me. Especially that growling noise, and that part about the fingers going in but not disengaging. Could be the adjustment on the clutch fingers, and you should check that out while yuo've got her split, but my money's on the throwout bearing or the linkage to it.
