There are an awful lot of variables here. It depends on the age, maturity level of the kid, task at hand, people you're dealing with, etc. You have to consider it all, and hope you make the right choice. I remember my sister and me cutting wheat with a grain binder when I was probably ten and she twelve. Me on the tractor and she on the binder. We survived. On the other hand, an acquaintance of mine who had more ambition than sense rented more land and sent his 13 year old son out on a 4020 with an 18 foor disc. The inevitable happened. The kid dumped the tractor into a gulley and was killed. Depending on how the variables fall into place, it can be a great experience, or a huge can of worms. The fact that you're asking for advice tells me you're not completely convinced.
