Hard telling what the pre-production models were. As others have mentioned, the "slot top" trans/rear end cover and accompanying seat were on SN 501 thru 15697. For whatever reason the seat and trans cover on yours could have been changed. Look at the casting code on the front right of the cover, in the form of 7*8*I or July 8, 1939; J is 40, if it is a K (1941) or higher it is not the original cover for a 39 or some 40 models. I don't know the month it was changed in 1940, but if production was fairly even it was before mid-year. Those codes are pretty much fool proof. Also, if yours is a 1939, all casting codes on most major parts will have an I for the year. If an early 40, it can have both I and J codes.
