That timing gear is a press fit on the camshaft and it probably has a woodruff key too. You can tell if something is wrong with the cam gear when you bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Both valves on that piston should be closed. The timing gear is meshed with the crankshaft gear. Here's a picture of them. Hal
