I live and have lived in areas where straight Wt oils are too thick when cold (Minnesota, Montana, Colorado high country) so I believe in multi Wt oils. 15-40 Rotella, or RPM Delo are favorites. 10 40 Automotive oil is also very fine. Issues with the additives in multi Wt oils are real but only are a concern when the engine is operated at speeds and temperatures that cause failure in other components first. Synthetic oils in a broken in engine are my first choice. They do not have the breakdown issues of even straight Wt oils. Remember (as you indicated) the manuals were written way before the era of radical improvement in fuels and oils. In coolant, I like a product that is compatible with multiple system metals. (orange) 50 50 mix. changed every two years. JimN
