What's in the radiator now, Dave? I'd change it out, whatever it is, if only because it's likely been there a while. On my BN, I ran a batch of straight water for a while and it was picking up some rust, so I gave it one hot run with the washing soda mix that they talk about in the manual. Something like two pounds to 13 qts of water. Mix it well in buckets first before poring it into the radiator. Then run the engine hot. Since I don't have shutters on the BN, I just took a piece of newspaper and let the suction of the fan hold it to the grill. Ran it until it was good and hot. It was almost black when I drained it. I let it cool for a bit after I drained it, then refilled it with hot tap water. Ran that for a few days, drained it cold and let the hose water run right down through it for a few minutes, then refilled with 50-50 distilled water and plain old green anti-freeze.

On the oil, we had a discussion here a while back about oil in old, unrebuilt engines. Basically, start out using straight 30 non-detergent oil. At each change add a quart of detergent oil in place of one of the non-detergent until after a few changes you're running detergent entirely. That's all to avid having a chunk of crud break loose all at once and plug something up. Once she's on a diet of regular oil, you can make your own choice about a multi-vis, especially if you have cold starting issues.

The only place I'd stay with straight 30 is in the oil filler cup. I've found that 10-30, for example is too light and it gets sucked into the combustion air and will blow out through the ehaust a little. Going to straight 30 there solved that issue.
