The book says to take a 1/8" piece of flat stock and put it between the gears. I think 1/8" by about 3/4. Whatever fits between the teeth. Do not use a hardened punch as it will mark or scar the teeth ( trust me I know this first hand) There is an opening on the top that will let you insert this flat stock. I am not near the pump or book right now but doing this from memory. Once you have the gears locked with the flat stock you can insert a piece of square stock in the coupler and break it loose.
