I recently got a new battery for the Super A and did not polarize the generator. $300 later I have a rebuilt generator and a new voltage regulator and a new battery having destroyed all 3 in the process of running the tractor without doing the polarization. After installing the rebuilt generator and installing the new regulator, I connected the battery and polarized the generator. I then look over at the wiring harness going to the ammeter and the on switch and see the oil soak harness boiling the oil out of the harness. That tells me that I am pulling a lot of current out of the battery to the generator. I disconnected the battery quickly and the boiling of the oil stopped. I have two manuals for the Super A and noticed that the panel with the light switch, on/off switch and ammeter is not wired per the pictures in the manual. So that may be the problem. Also voltage regulator sent to me does not match the regulator that was on the tractor. The voltage regulator sent to me seems to match the one shown in the manual based on the wiring connections shown in pictures. The Voltage Regulator that was on the tractor contained one coil/switch and a 1 ohm resistor from the L terminal. The new voltage regulator contained two coil/switches. On the new regulator there were there connections to the side of the regulator, Bat, F and L and then a Gen connection under the regulator. This matches the pictures in the original Operators manual that I have. Does anyone have a schematic or wiring diagram for the Super A that they could post or point me to a location where I could get a copy of it? There was no schematics in the Operators Manual or in the I&T Shop Manual. Do I have the correct Voltage Regulator installed on my tractor?
