Robert, like Allan mentioned, you need to remove your shifter and see if it has just slipped out of the shifting rail. Is so just take a big screwdriver and slide all rails into the neutral position and put the shifter back in. This is a common problem with old tractors with a million hours on them. If this is all wrong with your M the shifter can be welde up on the end and ground back down to fit the rails much better and cure this problem.
