Tracy: If there is no end movement on steering shaft, it aint broke so don't fix it.
The keyways on the vertical shaft can become loose enough to give 1-1/2 turns free travel at the steering wheel. I wouldn't advise welding gear or control arm to the vertical shaft. What I have done is grind a larger key to fit the worn taper in the keyways, then welded key in the shaft, grinding it off enough so the gear is a press fit. The control arm being tapered can be drawn in place by the nut that holds it on. I look at welding key in shaft this way, shaft is toast anyhow, the gear and control arm can be repaired. By the way my Super A has 25 years in now with this fix, 15 of it was commercial agriculture and it is as tight as new.
When you finish, forget the gear oil, put zerks in and pump in 3 tubes of moly grease. That gear box was a poor design. I've never seen a new tractor that didn't leak by the time the tractor was 5 years old. My Super A hasn't leaked in 25 years. Add grease every time you grease tractor. Let face it, you find anyone using gear oil in that steering gear box, and has 25 years perfect steering in one of these offsets and you've found the guy that only looks at his tractor.
