Yea, its just a big gamble. If you plant a high population and you get a cool dry season you end up with nubbins, but if everythig is perfect 40000 might work. Most corn hybrids are flex ear so they adjust the size and number of ears to conditions. The trouble with multi ear corn is the stalk and root system are not strong enough to support the extra weight so a plant that produced four ears would have to have a 2 inch thick stalk to support it and that would cause other problems with harvest, tillage ect. Chuck, how's your corn standing? Down here near Preston everyone is getting nervious because the stalks are weak and some is starting to go down. Moisture is in the 30% range so taking it now gets kinda spendy.
