Unless your 12v generator is the three brush style you will most lilely have to use a voltage regulator to keep from charging too much even on low charge.
A three brush generator draws the voltage from the third brush which is less than charging voltage. A two brush generator has the field coil voltage coming from the same brush as the charging voltage. The higher voltage will result in a higher charging rate and the posibilty of burning out the generator or overcharging the battery.
