Nothing held the brake lever except rust. I thought it had a key or cotter pin but nothing present. Just has a cotter pin on the side to keep it from moving side to side.
You have to take off the brakes and pull the brake rod out through the brake housing. The brake lever is attached to the brake rod. Make sure you have a rubber mallet because the brake cover is usually rusted on. Let me know if you need more info.
